The Benefits Of Having A Running Buddy

With lockdown easing and the world reopening once more, exercise may not be number one on our list of priorities. Therefore, we have to become more adept to multitasking, and running with a friend is a great way to socialise while exercising. Here are a few of the benefits to finding a running buddy.

It Keeps You Consistent

You’re more likely to run on the days when you’re not feeling so motivated if you’ve set a date with a friend, as you have someone to hold you accountable. Plus, if you arrange a set time to run each week it helps to form habitual training as it becomes part of your routine. You’re much less likely to bail on a commitment you’ve made to a friend than one you’ve made to yourself.

You Train Harder

When running with a friend you push each other to train harder. Humans perform better in the presence of others which is a phenomenon known as ‘social facilitation.’ It’s great to work towards a goal together, and you can keep each other motivated, especially if you’re working towards a particular race or event.

Safety

Running with a friend is a lot safer, especially when running at night or trying out a new route. If health issues arise or you have a fall you’ve got someone there to help you get back home.

It Makes It More Fun

A running buddy is a great distraction from boredom as chatting can make the time go by more quickly. Plus, there is the added bonus of combining socialising and exercising if you’re strapped for time and want to catch up with a friend.

If you’re looking to join a running group, Facebook is a great place to start to find a local club. It’s also a great way to form new friendships if you’re new to the area and looking to meet people with similar interests.
